Millions of homes have them, but they're one of the major causes of household fires every year -- clothes dryers.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency says more than 15,000 fires are caused by dryers each year.
There are also about 400 injuries and 15 deaths a year caused by dryer fires.
One of the biggest culprits in those fires is lint buildup.
"When this lint reduces the air flow, not only does it increase the chance of fire, it also makes your dryer more expensive to operate,” said Chief John Doering of the Dunlap Fire Department.
Most people know they should clean off the lint trap, but the fire chief says there are other things people don't pay attention to that could cause fires.
"They don't clean the outlet to the outside on a monthly basis,” said Chief Doering.
He also says people should make sure ducts going from the dryer to the outside are made a certain way -- vinyl ducts with ridges are not not the safest options.
"[T]he best choice of all -- a solid aluminum pipe, no ridges on the inside, the air just moves right through. There are less places to catch the lint.”
These are all things the chief thinks people should keep in mind, so a routine trip to the dryer can be just that -- routine.
Chief Doering also says people should never leave their dryers running when they're not at home.
